Critical thinking (thinking about thinking)-1st part: Intelligent development of knowledge structures in the human mind
In one of his works Moore defines critical thinking as a meta-cognitive act when a person elaborates thoughts on the quality of the reasoning process and concurrently thinks about some conclusion. The critical thinker has two equally important objectives: to come to a correct conclusion and improve progressively the mental processes that conducing him to this conclusion. Einstein used to say that a man is important not for what he thinks but how he thinks. In a similar manner in an intelligence report the most important are not the conclusions but the processes of arriving to them. An intelligence report differs from a traditional report, among other things, in the label of quality. This label gather characteristics of intelligence production process such as collection process, number and quality of sources, their credibility, monitoring period, applied techniques, established inference chains and outcome conclusions. In other words, both experienced annalist obtaining information from Google search engine and a team of expert annalists with strong methodological process and first-level technological support, can come to the same conclusions. In the first case, the right guess in the conclusions will be a possibility; in the second case this will be a consequence of a scientific based rigorous process.
The error cognitive lines establish that the stored patterns (experiences) are not used as general patterns or universal application; rather they serve for surviving in the social ecosystem where these experienced are being gained. The basic capacities that defines human intelligence such as learning, creativity and capacity to resolve problems, are not generated spontaneously, they are results of intelligent development of knowledge structures in our minds. The major part of analysis and outcome reports are contaminated with these error cognitive lines, which I define as parasite inferences. In some cases it is necessary and even useful to know and induce the patterns of those who will realize an analysis or produce a report. Unfortunately, for the most part, the conclusions are drawn in silence or invisibly deforming thus the reality of what is happening actually. In the next articles I will write about error cognitive lines bound up with mentioned intellectual capacities as well as craft of thinking. The objective is to find out those lines, reduce or eliminate them.
